Seeds of thought
It all started with a question – would people buy plants online? Not big ones, but smaller ones. Plants that would fit into a small rectangular box. We wondered if plants could survive a postal journey without water and light and still turn up on the doorstep of a customer’s home, flawless fresh, and fabulous?
Little did we know these questions sowed the seeds of what would later become Plants in a Box.
From little things, big things grow
Our love of plants runs deep. Our founding members have a rich history in horticulture spanning back 40 years and turns out…their plant love is contagious! They shared their passion with the next generation and in 2014, we decided to share that love with the rest of Australia. Plants in a Box was grown!
We set up an eBay account, purchased some boxes, listed a handful of plants and then, we waited. We didn’t sell much at first, but, with the continued support of our customers, we grew from strength to strength, expanding our product offering, building our brand, and growing our team. Six months into our journey we outgrew eBay and launched our very own website.
Fast forward 8 years, Plants in a Box sells 1,000s of boxes a month - shipped directly from our nursery in Currumbin Valley. We have tens of thousands of passionate followers on our socials and thousands of verified 5 star reviews. We started out with just 10 plant varieties, now we have over 800 varieties and offer a huge range of accessories as well.
Australian owned, Australian Grown
We knew that gardeners would value buying quality plant stock directly from a small (but mighty) Australian grower who cares less about pot size, and more about the health of their plants. That’s why we give our customers access to top notch tubestock – smaller plants, grown by us in smaller grow pots, with fully established root systems. Traditionally tubestock is bought by large scale nurseries, transferred into larger pots and sold on to the public. But we took out the middleman! Which means, better value, less changing of hands and more plant love!
We wanted to make sure that anyone, anywhere in Australia (even those without access to a local plant store) can shop a huge variety of plants, anytime. Our eco ethos
Plants have the power to heal the planet and the people living on it. They help people connect to nature and contribute to improved mental health and wellbeing. Planting out gardens and regenerating forests means cleaner air, healthier ecosystems, and more habitat for local wildlife. To do our part, we grow up to a million plants a year, which go out to communities all over Australia.
We steer clear of unsustainable practices by minimising the use of plastic and other single-use items. We’ve invested heavily into our packaging and have created the first truly home-compostable plant packaging system - The Plant Traveller! Our nursery has minimal chemical use and uses organic integrated pest management wherever we can.
